PhD position in nanophotonic media: Photon Scattering

Highlights:

1. Developing and studying new nanosized light sources: The main objective of this proposal is to invent well-defined light sources and sinks, and perform new experiments with them. In parallel new models of light propagation will be developed that take into account the fundamental character of each type of source.

2. These novel embedded sources will allow us to observe a number of new phenomena in nanophotonic materials. Among other, techniques we will use second-harmonic generation, two-photon fluorescence, and simple luminescence to generate these embedded sources in nanophotonic media. The research will be carried out at FOM institute AMOLF.

3. Applicants should have (or should expect to have soon) a master degree in hysics, or Physical Chemistry, or an equivalent diploma giving access to doctoral studies, without having to acquire any further qualifications.

4. The position is intended as full-time (38 hrs / week, 12 months / year) appointment in the service of Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) for the duration of four years. After successful completion of the PhD research a PhD degree will be granted at University of Twente or the University of Amsterdam.

5. Several courses are offered, specially developed for PhD-students.

6. AMOLF assists any new foreign employee with housing and visa applications and compensates their transport costs and furnishing expenses.

PhD position in nanophotonic media

Highlights:
1. FOM Institute AMOLF is offering two PhD positions in the group Photon Scattering (led by Prof. Ad Lagendijk) of AMOLF’s department of Nanophotonics.

2. To develop new acoustic techniques that enables to focus in and through scattering media and will enable to locate hidden objects.
3. Scattering prohibits focusing waves inside a strongly scattering medium, and it disables the detection of objects located in the scattering media. Recent revolutionary developments in optics have made clear at hat these fundamental limitations can be lifted by spatially controlling wave fronts by individually addressing a large number of pixels in combination with a feedback mechanism.

4. We want to develop phase plates for acoustics. This project is a collaboration with the world-leading acoustic laboratory Laboratoire Ondes et Acoustique in Paris, led by Prof. Mathias Fink. This research is part of the Shell-FOM Industrial Partnership. Location: Two years at AMOLF in Amsterdam and two years at LOA in Paris.

SIA Youth Scholarship: Scholarships for undergraduate studies in NTU and NUS

Highlights:

1. This particular scholarship scheme was started around 20 years ago by the Singapore Ministry of Education in collaboration with Singapore Airlines. Each year they select 25-40 students from all over India after selection tests and interviews.

2. Selection is strictly merit based and only for Indian citizens. Applications are invited through advertisements in most newspapers, usually in June.

3. Selected SIA Youth Scholars attend the top Junior Colleges (JCs) in Singapore pursuing courses in the Arts or Sciences. Scholars were assigned only to the top 5 JCs until recent years when this policy was changed to include other JCs as well.

4. Academics and other facilities are top-notch, giving scholars ample opportunities to excel in any area they desire. Boarding facilities are good and located close to JCs; Indian vegetarian food is also catered.

5. The curriculum prepares students for the Sinagpore-Cambridge GCE 'A' Level examinations. Great emphasis is laid on co-curricular activities. The progress of scholars is monitored, indeed, monthly reports are written by tutors.

6. The options available after completion of this scholarship are numerous. One may choose to have further education overseas - countries like USA, UK and Australia are the most popular.

7. Scholarships for undergraduate studies in NTU and NUS are readily available. Various other scholarships to study in Sinagpore and abroad are also offered by Sinagpore companies and government bodies. One may of course, choose to return to India as well.

8. For official information about the scholarship refer to the Ministry of Education's website : http://www.moe.gov.sg/siayouthscholarships/application.htm

Appointment to IIT faculty: Norms may be relaxed

Highlights:

1. HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has said that norms could be relaxed in “exceptional cases” while making direct appointments to the IIT faculty instead of contractual appointments as prescribed by the Ministry.

2. “The norm is that a person with PhD, who does not have teaching and research experience, should be on contract for three years.

3. “However, if the IIT Board wants or the IIT Director recommends to the board for reducing the contract period for certain exceptional cases, we would not interfere in that,” he said in Karan Thapar’s Devil’s Advocate programme in CNN-IBN.

4. The Minister’s comments came in the backdrop of IIT faculty opposing the provision of contractual appointment at entry level in the institutes. The IIT faculty has been demanding that Ph.D holders should not be appointed on contract.

5. Mr. Sibal said people can be taken on tenure at the outset if they are exceptional cases. However, the IITs will have to set a uniform standard for that. It should not be done arbitrarily, he said.

6. Asked whether there could be relaxation to the compulsory four-year experience, as required at associate professor level for promotion to professorship, Mr. Sibal said government will never interfere with the IIT system to absorb exceptional cases at any stage.
