PhD Fellowship in Medical Sciences

Highlights:
1. A 4‐year fellowship to complete a PhD study in Medical Sciences is available at the Department of Cell Biology, University Medical Center Groningen in Groningen, the Netherlands. Outstanding candidates with a strong background in biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology and/or related fields are invited to apply.

2. Successful candidates will be involved in a highly interdisciplinary project entitled: “Dynamic architecture of myelin membranes in health and disease”

3. This project will focus on the ability of lipids to organize proteins and/or mediate protein‐protein interactions in (healthy and diseased) myelin to better elucidate myelin repair processes in multiple sclerosis.

4. Next to classical biochemical methods, we will employ advanced optical microscopy (confocal imaging, single‐molecule spectroscopy, Fluorescence (Cross‐) Correlation Spectroscopy, FRET) to look at these processes in both model membranes, i.e. giant unilamellar vesicles –see figure‐ and cultured oligodendrocytes. Specifically, we will study how lipids (e.g. galactosylceramide, sulfatide, and gangliosides) organize myelin proteins (PLP, NF155), and which and how exogenous factors (extracellular matrix proteins) interfere with myelin assembly.

5. Interested candidates should send their application, including full CV, diploma and references, to Dr. Nicoletta Kahya (N.N.Kahya@med.umcg.nl ), and/or to Prof. Dick Hoekstra (D.Hoekstra@med.umcg.nl), University Medical Center Groningen, Department of Cell Biology, A. Deusinglaan 1, 9713 AV Groningen, The Netherlands.
