Europe: Marie curie Fellowship

Highlights:
1. Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowships (EIF)
  Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowships are individual fellowships that aim at providing advanced training tailored to the researchers' individual needs with a view to adding different/complementary scientific competencies. This in order to allow them to reach or reinforce a position of professional maturity and independence or to permit them to resume their career. The duration of these fellowships is between 1 and 2 years. Applicant researchers should be from EU or Associated States with at least 4 years research experience or a Ph.D. and willing to spend a mobility period working in a host institution located in another EU or Associated State, different from his/her own and from that where they have been recently active.
Proposals from all areas of scientific and technological research of interest to the European Community are welcome and there are no priority areas.

2. Marie Curie Outgoing International Fellowships (OIF)
These are individual fellowships that aim to reinforce the international dimension of the career of European researchers by giving them the opportunity to be trained in a world level third country research organisation (from 1 to 2 years), and then to apply the experience gained in a return host institution in a Member State or Associated State (typically half the duration of the first phase). The Fellowships also aim to respond to the researchers' needs in terms of complementing their training in inter/multi-disciplinary research, research management skills and intersectoral mobility. Proposals from all areas of scientific and technological research of interest to the European Community are accepted and there are no pre-defined priority areas.

3. Marie Curie Incoming International Fellowships (IIF)
Marie Curie Incoming International Fellowships are individual fellowships that aim to attract top-class researchers from third countries to work and undertake research training in Europe from 1 to 2 years (incoming phase), with a view to developing mutually-beneficial research co-operation. In the case of emerging and transition economies and developing countries, the scheme may assist fellows to return to their country of origin for, typically, half the duration of the first phase (re-integration phase). Proposals from all areas of scientific and technological research of interest to the European Community are accepted and there are no pre-defined priority areas.

4. How to apply?
Incoming International Fellowships are available to researchers with the nationality of any third country (i.e. not an EU Member State or Associated State) with at least 4 years full-time research experience or a doctorate and wishing to spend a mobility period working in a host institution located in a Member State or Associated State. The researcher applies in liaison with the host institution (and with the re-integration host if there is a re-integration phase). Eligible host institutions are organisations active in research or research training (e.g. universities, research organisations, international organisations, enterprises, etc.).

Write good CV.....

The main point to be aware of when writing an academic CV is that you should obviously focus on your academic achievements and devote less space to your work experience. Your educational history should be the first section. List in chronological order all of the relevant courses you took as an undergraduate, giving special prominence to the ones you got good grades in. Also give details of any research projects, dissertations, or extended essays you have done. Include your extra circular activates.

In your covering letter explain why you chose this particular university over others what attracted you to that particular postgraduate programme. Show your real enthusiasm for the subject, and how you have had a long-running interest in it. Show that you have read around the subject and are aware of its wider implications, as well as any exciting recent developments.

Postdoctorate CVs

If you are applying for a postdoctorate position, you will also need to include any experience gained as a postgraduate student. For this reason, academic CVs for research posts may well be longer than the normal two sides of A4.

Describe your research interests. Say who your supervisor was and what areas you worked in.

Include any scholarships, bursaries or other sources of funding that you were awarded. Being able to compete successfully for funding is a valuable skill.

List the conferences you attended, or even presented at, to demonstrate commitment to your field.

Explain any technical procedures that you are now proficient in, or analytical techniques, such as statistical analysis, that you have learnt. Only include details about your first degree if relevant, otherwise simply state the university, class achieved, and maybe summarise your dissertation. Give a synopsis of your PhD thesis, possibly in an appendix.

Other skills

The kinds of skills acquired as a postgraduate are highly sought-after both in the commercial and academic worlds. Subheadings you might like to add include:

  • Management (eg. project management);
  • Administration;
  • Organisation (eg. time management, timetable organisation);
  • Communication (eg. discussions with supervisors, giving presentations, writing reports);
  • Teaching experience

Publications and references

Depending on how many publications you have, either include them all under a bibliography subheading, or list a selection of your most important publications along with a note saying that a full list is contained in an appendix attached to the CV. List publications in reverse chronological order (i.e. most recent first). You may want to break the bibliography down into subheadings such as published, in press, conference proceedings, etc.

Giving more than two references is standard for a postdoctorate application; one or more from your postgraduate degree, and one from another individual who can comment on your personal qualities as well as your academic performance.
